"KL Rahul, the captain of the Lucknow Super Giants
(LSG), declared forcefully that no team was able to dominate the powerplay
during the opening weekend of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), as his club
lost to the Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur on Sunday by a margin of 20 runs.
LSG struggled in the powerplay, being limited to 47/3 while pursuing the goal of 194, despite having qualified for the playoffs in each of their two games since their founding in 2022.
In contrast, RR fared somewhat better in the same phase, amassing 54 runs at the expense of two wickets.
Due to a new regulation that the IPL implemented this season
enabling bowlers to bowl two bouncers each over, Trent Boult's delivery struck
both skipper Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal's helmet within this period,
necessitating a concussion test.
Rahul did stress that since it was their first game out of 14 in the group stage, they won't be attaching too much importance to the defeat.
"It's just the first game, and I won't read too much into it or delve into too much analysis," Rahul stated during his post-match address.
"Every team needs to be strong on the powerplay, and I don't think any club has mastered it yet. Mohsin was our powerplay bowler in the previous campaign, although the previous year he wasn't quite well. It feels nice to have him back. Since his arrival, Navin has been essential to us," he continued.
Rahul thought that 194 wasn't a very big goal for the Sawai
Mansingh track.
"I don't believe the target was excessive. It was hardly the equivalent of ten overs. We had moments when we bowled well. simply made a few errors.
Even though they lost three wickets quickly, the captain saw great benefit from their chase of 194.
"We'll grow from the little errors we make. When we give ourselves an opportunity to chase 194 on our lineup when we are three (down) without cause," he remarked.
However, we must figure out how to win cricket matches. From here, we'll aim to expand and see where we can get stronger," Rahul remarked.
Rahul was pleased to begin the current IPL season with a half-century after missing the majority of the previous season, which he described as "painful."
"Scoring runs makes you feel fantastic every time. But ultimately, winning is what matters to us. That makes you feel more content."
He also gave Justin Langer credit for calming things down in the locker room.
"Langer has instilled a great deal of serenity within the group. I took his line when I said we have to figure out how to win cricket matches. It's fun to have him around."
"We've all seen him coach Australia to T20 World Cup and Ashes victories," Rahul said, praising their coach.
