Empowering Journey: From Blindness to CEO Success Story and Kotak Mahindra Bank's Growth

Over the past few years, Kotak Mahindra Bank has been rapidly growing its credit card business and drawing a sizable customer base with its 811 digital program.

Parents of blind Shrikant Bolla in Sitarampuram, Machilipatnam district, Andhra Pradesh, asked him to get rid of him because some relatives believed he would be 'useless' to them as they aged.

But destiny had other ideas. Bolla was the first visually impaired international student to be admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States and receive full financial aid while studying business management.

Now, at the age of 32, he serves as CEO of Bollant Industries, a company that Ratan Tata owns and that produces disposable consumer packaging options that are environmentally beneficial.

In a biopic, Bolla's inspirational journey is shown, with Rajkummar Rao playing the main part.

The movie is scheduled to open on May 10. Bolla is steadfast in his belief that "I can do anything" while "the world looks at me and says, 'Shrikant, you can't do anything.'"

Bolla's school refused to let him study science and math because of a state rule, claiming that visually challenged children would find it difficult to work with diagrams and graphs.

It was suggested that he study social sciences, literature, languages, and the arts.

Exasperated, Bolla enlisted a teacher's assistance and took the board to court. He prevailed in court. The court decided that senior science and math classes in all Andhra Pradesh state board schools are open to visually impaired pupils.

However, this was only the start of his numerous hardships.

He made the decision to apply to the IITs, one of India's most esteemed engineering institutes, after achieving a 98% exam score.

The coaching institutions he reached out to, though, declined. In an interview, he said to the BBC, "Top coaching institutions told me that the curriculum would be like raining on a small plant." But I don't regret anything. I didn't want the IITs, and I didn't want them either."

Bolla chose to apply to American universities instead, and after doing so, Cambridge, Massachusetts' MIT made five offers to Bolla.

Bolla played chess and cricket for India at the national level in defiance of being ignored in his PT class at school.

In 2012, Shrikant came back to Hyderabad to start Bollant Industries. In addition to creating ecologically friendly items, his business employs people with disabilities. Bollant operates four production facilities: two in Hyderabad, Telangana, and one each in Nizamabad and Hubli, Karnataka.

Bolla was also included in the World Economic Forum's list of Young Global Leaders for 2021.
