Gujarat Titans defeated Chennai Super Kings by 35 runs in Ahmedabad on Friday, handing the former their sixth loss of the season. With brilliant century from Shubman Gill and Sai Sudarshan, GT stormed to 231/3. The hosts then held the Super Kings to 196/8 to maintain their playoff hopes.
With just two runs on the board before both of their openers, including the seasoned captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, failed to make an impression and went for a duck, CSK's top-order batsmen failed to chase the target. The current champs were reeling at 10/3 after the dismissal.
On the other hand, Moin Ali and Daryl Mitchell battled bravely, scoring 109
runs together. Both launched strong attacks to reduce the needed run rate, but
Mohit Sharma's vital wickets of Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja turned the tide
in favour of GT. Later, Rashid Khan invited Santner and Jadeja to join the
party, which put CSK in a precarious situation.
After that, MS Dhoni entered the game at number eight and produced a stunning display with three massive sixes in the last over. Even though his innings thrilled the crowd, CSK was unable to win the game. Many have questioned CSK's plan in light of Dhoni's decision to bat at number nine in the last match against Punjab Kings, which has raised questions over his batting form throughout the IPL 2024.
Following CSK's loss,
Virender Sehwag publicly discussed Dhoni's batting
position and said the argument should come to an end. He said that Dhoni is
aware of his wishes and knows what he wants to accomplish. Sehwag underlined
that other batsmen must rise to Dhoni's caliber if CSK want to win games. He
emphasized how crucial it is for players like Mitchell and Ali to meet the
benchmarks established by Gill and Sudarshan, or for players like Jadeja and
Dube to score fast half-centuries in order to be within 20 balls of the target.
"I'm not interested in getting into fights. Anywhere he bats, it's alright. Whether they win or lose, it doesn't matter because he played brilliantly and thrilled the crowd. That's all he did was entertain the audience," Sehwag said.
Fleming added that Dhoni's impact on the team should not be underestimated. He stated that the team management will take full advantage of what the 42-year-old star has to offer the team.
Like
merely hitting fours and sixes, which he has excelled at. And let's find someone
else to be the best in the competition if he isn't. Regarding Dhoni's
nine-strike position, Fleming stated, "So don't undervalue the impact he
has on the team just because he's in there." It's a fine line to walk, but
rest assured that we have his best interests at heart and that he still wants
to give us his all. He's good, rest of the country," he continued.
